Boxing is based on the rules drawn up by the Marquess of Queensberry in 1865. They encompass the present-day rules that are governed by the World Boxing Council. The bout takes place in a ring between two competitors whose main objective is to gain the most points by landing punches on their opponent. the match is held over various rounds (depending on the weight category). Contestants either win by points, stoppage or, the most spectacular way, a knockout. The word comes from the Latin term boxus, meaning to box. It is socalled because the hand is put into a clenched fist with the thumb laid over the fingernails to form a box.
